POWERS OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Before you say this is ironic, I fully admit im a social media addict. I have even done a course in the powers of it. Mark my words sooner rather than later there will be addiction classes on this.

Social media Is hugely powerful now and sometimes can be used in the wrong context. My old manager Bruno would play a game on Saturday morning in Galway. We would have to sell a phone to someone without using Internet lingo such as data bundle, Facebook,  what’s app, twitter etc. Prize, if achieved was a morning off. This was hard as it’s how everything is based. All marketing and advertisement is Facebook and Internet based and with the power of social media a lot of people would not be as famous or made there income. It helps with awareness and to grow business and helps find a distressed persons wallet or phone after a weekend of disaster. It has replaced DVD’s and CD’S along with landline’s at home. What some including me forget is that there was days before mobiles, before media was so powerful. Days where a tomigotchi was more powerful than any application, where tetris was fought over in my family at christmas and then moved to hours of playing snake on a 3210. Where a battery lasts three days. Where you would arrange to meet at a specific time and there was no texting nor a group event set up on Facebook. You were there and if not the party went on without you. Now we have tinder, dating apps with strangers, snapchat and loads of other applications that have made millions.

Martina who sold these back in 1996, never seen this takeover coming. When you look at it, who was the instigator?;Steve Jobs, a college dropout and changed the mould. His brain created the most powerful product in the world. It is known by its symbol alone and that’s marketing at it’s finest. An inspiration of mine but also a guy that had to taste failure before success took over. And sadly missed by Apple. I don’t like iphone for many reasons and they will be taken over by Android in time. I solely believe they have done nothing to move on from when jobs left, smart tv? Smart watch? All too late.

In older times mass was an outlet to go for a couple of beers and some fun. Where a football match was a social event every Sunday and a dance was a vital day of the week. My parents and some of you I’m sure didnt drink until late 20’s but smoked like troopers. No disco’s or naggins with a cheeky shift before the curry chips and taxi home. Social media is how I have grown up. I was one of the first to own a mobile amongst my friends. I was twelve, kids as young as eight have Facebook now. Is it wrong? The Internet is a scary place in all aspects. It’s not in part, as parents can keep in contact with there kids. I remember having a old Nokia and with tinkering I downloaded a video recorder before they became common. I have always had a huge interest and talent in technology and understand the powers. What annoys me most of all is people that are on the net or Facebook for that matter for the general nose and to see if someone they hold a grudge against have lost weight, what they are wearing etc and there are the Facebook users that have to tell you what they do every minute of the day including there meal times. There is a game I played with 6 of us in Dublin this weekend and I would like you all to try it. Put all your phone’s on top of each other face down and first to touch has to pick up the bill. It will bother some but it’s hilarious and you will see conversation flow. If there still there when leaving then split the bill. (Varley lost that game but never paid, tight arse). If I were to start a restaurant the first thing I would do is ban technology. It kills the art of conversation. I’m scared to see where it will end as it’s only begun.

How does it relate to illness. As like you, when I first heard some of these medical terms the first thing we do now is “Google it” and many times it will show things worse than they are. When i googled diabetes I seen death, osteoporosis (wheelchair) , CF and transplant, death. I’m happy that when I had a brain haemmorage I was asleep as 9/10 times death was a certainty. Internet will give you the worst scenario. Martina Googles everything and although Anthony loves his technology he doesn’t use half of it. What you want to believe is your own power and your brain is a better processor than any phone or tablet. 4GB ram, 16gb space with a 16 megapixel camera might sound great but it’s only a fucking expensive object. Reading makes that brain stronger so maybe give the phone a break or download a book on the phone. Someday I will have to go back and sell them to people which I enjoy sometimes doing but I do worry as some are so dependant it’s like there child. I have encountered the public at there worst and it’s not pretty. At the end of the day we might sell them but we don’t break them for you or make them international calls. Some are so nosy it’s more annoying as they will not ask you questions to your face. As for this website, everyone needs to understand this and pass it on. I’m very open to criticism and open to talking about what I have been through CF, xplant and brain haemmorage. The endless fundraising and awareness. A little warning it will never stop even when I do pass away. It doesn’t hurt my feelings. It makes me stronger. Don’t be shy, ask me questions. And remember that everything that is being done by your IP address(yes your Internet has its own address, it’s how I know over 20,000 different people have viewed this site in less than 2 months) is being recorded by millions of servers. It is so powerful we can see who reads this site and what country they reside in. Big brother is only a pup compared to the Internet. Now I’m off to update my dinner status. #beware #socialmediaisaddictive
